Le Grand is perfectly positioned on a promontory that overlooks both the picturesque Fort and the Indian Ocean. The challenge was to relate new to the old, while attempting to create a building that represented its own age with integrity.

The Hotel is articulated as a three-story structure, half of which is cut into the ground, keeping the building's profile low in sympathy with the scale of the surrounding buildings. Le Grand was built as a series of picture frames, each window framing a stunning Panorama.

When keeping in mind the History and character of the Galle fort, we opted for the use of materials that would respond to the native character; such as using grout less stone wall and off form concrete walls, we were able to create a harmonious balance.
