TALAHENA BUNGALOW  |  MATARA

The project was for the restoration, refurbishment, renovation and addition of a new block to a dated Dutch period building. This represented a new challenge to our practice which was more acquainted with a palette of modern building materials & spaces.

Our initial schematics lead us to believe that the balance between the new and the old was fundamental to the success of the design. A direct contrast between the new structure and old was explored but the final design solution was for the new block to conform to proportions and materials of the existing structure. The construction of the new was meant to reflect the importance of the existing structure that surrounded it. It did not copy verbatim.

The final outcome was a synthesis between new and old which is held together by the thread of time.

Location: Matara, Sri Lanka
